The next morning, Peter went out to the pumpkin patch and located the largest, ripest pumpkin. And certainly the sweetest. It was as perfectly round and firm as one of Melony’s milk-filled breasts, and was as warm as a woman’s body, having been bathed in the morning sun.

This pumpkin had been the first to fruit, and now he set to hacking through its stem with a meat cleaver. Once severed from the vine, he raised the gourd over his head and dashed it on the cobblestone footpath that wound through the garden. It splintered into a dozen crescents and there at its centre, slick with pumpkin meat, was the head of his wife.

Peter yelped and bolted from his bed, sheets soaked with sweat. He threw open the shutter and looked out to the footpath. Its pale cobblestones, newly washed by rain, gleamed in the moonlight. In the garden, the pumpkin patch was untouched.
