ONE MINUTE SHE WAS TALKING to Detective Yang, the next Emily’s vision blurred. For a moment, she thought that her body was rejecting the corneas, but she was wrong. This was another vision, another memory from Maddie’s life.

Perfectly manicured hands scrolled through the contact list on a phone, then tapped on a name. All Emily had time to read was the person’s first name, Sergei. Then the reflection of a face appeared in a shiny armoire: Maddie. She held the phone to her ear. Emily couldn’t hear what she was saying, nor could she hear whether Sergei replied or what he said. The call lasted just a few seconds. Maddie put the cell phone away then turned around.

That’s when Emily realized that Maddie wasn’t alone. The girl that stood in an elegant home, which she had to assume was Maddie’s, couldn’t be older than thirteen. She wore yoga pants and a big sweatshirt. Her feet were bare, her long dark hair wet as if she’d had a shower. Her blue eyes brimmed with tears. Her face and neck were covered in bruises. Her wrists seemed raw and red, as if something had irritated her skin. Emily tried to get a closer look, but Maddie’s gaze swept upward, away from the girl’s hands and back to her face.

The longer Maddie stared at her, the more Emily realized that the girl was frightened to death. She was shaking, her shoulders hunched forward, her chest quivering with sobs. Yet when Maddie put her hand on the girl’s arm, which Emily could only interpret as a soothing gesture, the girl shrank back. She didn’t want to be touched. Didn’t trust anybody. Emily didn’t need to hear Maddie’s or the girl’s words to understand that somebody had hurt the girl, and somehow Maddie was trying to help her.

Beneath the bruises and the tears, the girl was beautiful. Emily had never seen eyes like hers. They were captivating and drew the beholder to her. In a few years, the girl would bloom into a beautiful woman—if she could survive whatever hell she’d been through, whatever danger she was in. There was no doubt in Emily’s mind that the girl had fled from something or someone.

Emily watched as Maddie’s hand motioned the girl to follow her upstairs, where she opened a door to a bedroom. It was a cozy room with rich furnishings, a queen-size bed, an antique dresser, and a rocking chair with a reading lamp in one corner. The shades were drawn already.

Again Maddie exchanged a few words with the girl, but Emily couldn’t hear their conversation, only see what Maddie had seen.

When Maddie turned and left the room, the vision suddenly stopped, and Emily found herself staring at a planter with flowers. For a moment, she didn’t know where she was.

“Miss Warner? Are you alright? Do you need a doctor?”

Emily turned her head in the direction of the male voice, but the sudden movement made her sway. A firm hand gripped her elbow to help her regain her balance.
