The first time most people heard about psychological profiling of serial killers was from the 1991 movie The Silence of the Lambs, but as a technique it’s been in use since the 1940s. Scotland Yard were busily trying to build one for the Stripper. Police psychologists suggested that Brown’s missing jewelry meant he might be collecting souvenirs from his victims. They also believed he was probably a shy man who seemed outwardly quiet. The small size of all the victims – none was taller than five feet two inches – suggested that he was small himself and chose targets he could easily overpower. Some of what the psychologists said could be useful in building a case once the Stripper was in custody, but it didn’t do a lot towards finding him. Before a profile can be used to narrow down a list of suspects there has to be a list to work with, and the pool of men who might be the Stripper was huge. If anything Brown’s death made it larger.
