Chapter Six

All the blood drains from my face as Ashley opens the door and I hear the roar of the party briefly before she closes it behind her.

A million questions are running through my head. Why was she so calm to find her fiancé naked in bed with another woman? Do they plan to be in an open marriage? Is he a serial cheater and she’s just used to this? Regardless, one thing is for sure: I’m not okay with dating an engaged man and I’m not okay with being with someone who’s openly cheated on someone else. This whole situation is fucked.

“Macy,” Jake starts to say as he reaches for my bare shoulder, but I shove him away from me. It’s insane how repulsed I am by his touch now after reveling in it moments earlier.

“You’d have a lot of nerve to say anything to me right now.”

Jake looks down, understanding that he has nothing to say that I would want to hear, no doubt.

I feel dirty, tainted. I shiver in disgust just before I pull my clothes as fast as I can.

“I thought I couldn’t feel any lower after the way Duke treated me, but I was wrong.” My bra strap falls down my bicep and I pull it up, snapping it against my skin. “You’re a terrible person,” I say, my voice warbling. A lump is forming in my throat, but I’ll be damned before this asshole sees me cry. Luckily, I make it one step out of the room before the tear welling in my eye slips down my cheek.

I have to get out of here, but I still don’t know where my shit is. I open a few more doors down the hallway and finally find a pile of coats and purses...and Jazzy. Her back is to me as she picks up our things.

I wipe my eyes before I say anything, so she won’t know I’ve been crying.

“Hey,” I say, trying to force a bit of normalcy into my voice.

She whips around and it’s obvious that she’s been crying. But she plays it off. “Oh good, I’ve been trying to find you. I’m ready to go, are you?” She looks into my eyes and hesitates for a moment. My friend knows me too well.

“Have you been—crying?” she asks, her question punctuated by a hiccup.

“No, no, I’m fine,” I lie. “Let’s go. I’m ready to get out of here, too.”

“Did someone hurt you? I swear I’ll kill them...”

“No, it’s nothing like that. Nothing happened. Maybe I just look tired,” I struggle to come up with the lie because I’ve never seen Jasmine cry before. “Have you been crying, Jazz? Did someone mess with you?”

“Yeah. It’s been a bad night. I’m okay though, I swear. No one physically hurt me, Mace, I swear.”

I figure as much. With her Mohawk and piercings and leather upon leather upon leather, no one screws with Jasmine. Someone must have hurt her feelings instead.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Maybe later,” she sighs.
