Before going out, pick up a free copy of the Hartford Advocate, available at stores and restaurants all over the city, for listings of concerts, exhibits, films, and events. The Greater Hartford Arts Council (860-525-8629; letsgo arts.org), 45 Pratt St., promotes the city’s cultural scene and is a good resource for what’s going on in the arts and entertainment community. Check the online calendar of events, exhibitions, performances, festivals, and concerts.

The XL Center (860-249-6333; box office: 860-525-4500; xlcenter.com), 1 Civic Center Plaza, Trumbull and Asylum streets. This is the venue for sports contests, popular and rock concerts, and trade shows of all sorts.

ARTS CENTERS Aetna Theater (860-838-4142), 600 Main St. This attractive little theater on the lower level of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art presents a variety of live entertainment and films, including innovative concerts and programs designed to illuminate current exhibits; family activities that combine theater and artworks for parents and children together; film festivals; and live drama by local theater companies.

The Artists Collective (860-527-3205; artistscollective.org), 1200 Albany Ave. An arts and cultural center supporting African American musicians hosts year-round jazz performances, dance and theatrical productions, gospel singers, and art exhibits; call or check online for a schedule.

Austin Arts Center (860-297-2199), 300 Summit St., on the campus of Trinity College. Performances during the academic year, Sept.–Apr. Musical, dramatic, and dance performances, as well as art exhibits, by college faculty, students, and guest artists.

Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts (860-987-5900; 1-888-824-2874; bushnell.org), 166 Capitol Ave. The Bushnell is the city’s premier center for both local and touring performance artists and companies, and the performance home of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra (hartford symphony.org). The building, with its distinctive art deco auditorium, is a National Historic Landmark. Free tours of the hall are offered; call 860-987-6033 for a schedule.

Charter Oak Cultural Center (860-249-1207; charteroakcenter.org), 21 Charter Oak Ave. A variety of concerts and performances mounted year-round in the city’s oldest synagogue. Call for a schedule.

Hartford Conservatory of Performing Arts (860-246-2588; hartford conservatory.org), 834 Asylum Ave. A top-notch school for emerging performance artists. For the public, a year-round schedule of concerts as well as dance and theatrical performances at various venues.

Real Art Ways (860-232-1006; realartways.org), 56 Arbor St. Open throughout the year, with gallery hours Tues.–Thurs. and Sun. 2–10; Fri. and Sat. 2–11; closed Mon. Admission $3; films $9. An old typewriter factory turned art gallery and performance space is one of Connecticut’s most innovative arts centers. Real Art Ways is devoted to new and experimental art in exhibits, concerts, performances, and spoken-word and video presentations. A 153-seat cinema showing first-run independent and foreign films, and a café, are on the premises. A popular Creative Cocktail Hour event is held on the third Thursday of every month.

HARTFORD’S BUSHNELL CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS IS THE CITY’S PREMIER VENUE FOR CONCERTS, MUSICALS, DANCE PERFORMANCES, AND HOLIDAY SHOWS.
