Rain happens when water vapor rises high into the atmosphere. Remember, it’s cold up there, so the water vapor starts to change back into water. It condenses and sticks together, forming water drops or ice crystals. This makes the water visible again—as clouds! The drops in the clouds get bigger until they’re too heavy to stay in the air. Then gravity pulls them toward the earth as precipitation, like rain or snow. The liquid collects in oceans, rivers, or lakes, or ends up on land and soaks into the ground.
