TYPES OF SCREWS

Screws are important. They’re used in submarine hatches so water doesn’t get in. Ice climbers use long metal screws to help them climb. But to discover the benefit of screws, just look around your kitchen. Corkscrews, jar lids, bottle caps, and spinning stools are all examples of screws.

bolt: a strong screw used with a nut to fasten things.

worm gear: a rod with threads that fits against another gear.

spur gear: a disc with teeth that fits into another gear.

BOLT: The strongest type of screw is a bolt. Unlike other screws, a bolt does not cut into the material being fastened. Instead, it goes through a hole in the material and is then held in place by a nut on the other end. Both the bolt and the nut have threads, just like a regular screw, so they fit tightly together. Bolts are used to join machinery and furniture.

WORM GEAR: A worm gear looks like a screw. Its threads are fitted against a toothed wheel called a spur gear. Stringed instruments use tuning screws to keep them in tune. A tuning screw is made of a knob and a worm gear. When the musician turns the knob, the gears move, tightening the string. The use of worm gears to tune instruments dates to the sixteenth century.
