Almost 3,250 years ago, the ancient Egyptians began making glass. Scientists believe that glassmakers crushed quartz pebbles and the ashes from burned plants. They heated the mixture in a clay jar until it became a blob of glass that could then be worked into a disk of glass.

After the first eyeglasses were made in Italy, it did not take long before eyeglasses could be found all over Europe. By the sixteenth century, people had the idea to combine lenses, and the microscope was born. In the 1590s, Dutch eyeglass makers Hans and Zacharias Janssen might have built the first microscope when they combined a concave and a convex lens in a tube.

The microscope would soon be improved upon by other scientists, such as Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. His microscope could magnify objects 270 times their actual size. He used it to look at different objects, including mold and the eye of a bee.

Modern scientists use light microscopes that can magnify objects 1,000 to 2,000 times. They also use electron microscopes that bounce tiny particles called electrons off objects to magnify them up to 2 million times.
