ASK AN ADULT

6 Take a piece of wood about 12 x 2 x 2 cm and ask an adult to saw a small notch at one end. This will be your launch handle. Loop the elastic band over the notch and pull the rocket back so the elastic band is at full stretch. Release the band from the notch and watch your rocket shoot up into the air.

FUEL AND POTENTIAL ENERGY

Machines often store energy in a fuel tank. In a similar way, your rocket stores its energy in the elastic band. When you pull the elastic, the energy of your pull stretches the elastic molecules. The energy is now stored. When you release the elastic band, the stored energy turns into movement energy for your rocket.
