My dear Luzie,

You are truly a loyal soul, writing to me immediately to congratulate me, when we really haven’t written to each other in ages. I can only tell you that I am really getting a swell husband and am tremendously happy.

We met here in a delightful garden café, and went out together for the first time on New Year’s Eve. After that, we met at the sports ground every Sunday and went swimming afterward, until, after a seven-week courtship, we were engaged. You must concede this comes close to your justifiably famous American pace. Our engagement was really swell except that, unfortunately, the Hechts and all the other nice people weren’t there.

We celebrated on Saturday evening (02/17) in the same garden café where we met. We had an awesome meal that only Mother could have topped. Afterward we danced and had lots of fun. On Sunday morning something was cooking in the Friedländer household. You can’t even imagine the mountains of flowers that we received. Plus, really nice, practical gifts for the “household.” Don’t you dare laugh.

I was very shocked to hear that you are learning to drive. I can only wish you the best of luck. You have always been such a nice and loyal friend to us that it would be truly horrible if you died such a dreadful death.

I am really pleased with my job. I earn a good salary for my age, and I have a really nice boss whom we also see socially. He was also at my engagement party. Isn’t it funny that we both work at relief organizations, since the Joint [American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee] is really the same thing, just a little bigger? And speaking of careers, I also want to tell you—which you have probably already heard from Simons—that my fiancé has a really marvelous clothing store, a delightful salon that could just as well be in any other big city. I love to go there and try on all sorts of things. He owns the salon together with his relatives. This way I am getting an adorable aunt, and an uncle who is as nice as he is funny. Auntie is all of twenty-seven years old.

We actually live quite well here. Tonight we’re going to the movies to see the Dietrich film Angel that probably had its world premiere five years ago, but that doesn’t matter. There are so many American films here, one older than the other; many of them are very good. Recently we saw the animated film Snow White. Hopefully you, too, will recover from your illness. Why did you have to catch such a stupid flu? I don’t want to hear any more of that from you, do you understand?

Hopefully I have made everything up to you and told you everything worth knowing. I’m already excited for your next letter, which I hope will arrive soon.

Wishing you all the best going forward, with
