Be back soon. Left clothes just in case. Hoping because your ashes will be in one placeânot scattered by the windâyouâll come back in the same place. Old legends, you know. If not, you wonât get this letter anyway as youâll be flying around the city somewhere until one of my regulars spots you. Iâm worried, Gene. Letâs not do this again.
No kidding. If I never died again, it would be too soon. My joints hurt, and my skin ached like it had been pulled too tight over my bones. The scratchiness of the clothes bothered me to the point of pain. The warning in my body was clearâno more. I was not a game of Whack-a-Mole, popping back up for the pleasure of someone to put down. Eventually something bad was going to happen and I wouldnât come back. Now if only I could get people to stop killing me.
The world around the bunker was dark, heavy woods, and a strong breeze blew the scent of ocean my way. I was near the coast somewhere, but that didnât mean much. I could be in California for all I knew. I curled around myself, tucking my hands between my stomach and knees for warmth, and hoped that they came back to look for me soon. KC had fed on me this last time. Helped speed up my death. A mercy? Or more weight to pull him down? I hoped for the first.
Tyler said thatâs what vampires did. That I was nothing more than food. But I didnât sleep with ramen, kiss mac ân cheese, or have sex with microwave dinners. I loved him, and he loved me. Sure, love didnât conquer all. I was old enough and had been bashed around by the world enough times to know how it really went. Just like anything worthwhile, you had to work for it. And even working for it didnât always save relationships. If it had, my best friend wouldnât have tried to hurt me. And Devon wouldnât keep trying to eat my soul. And Cris would have been my true love. Sometimes love was just love, no matter how messed up it was. Everyone wanted it, then cried when they lost it. I was going to hold on to it with both hands, probably until it broke me or I saved him. Whichever came first.
A phone rang somewhere close by. I blinked through the darkness searching for the sound. Theyâd left me a phone? Hallelujah and all that weird Baptist TV stuff. I dug through a bag of random thingsâwhich looked like a rock in the darkâfinding a bottle of water, a PB&J sandwich, a bag of chips, and the phone. Next time I saw Cris, I was going to kiss him. The phone stopped ringing just as I found it, but I dialed back right away.
âCris,â I said the second his warm voice answered the phone.
âYouâre back. Did it work? Are you at the bunker still?â
âYes. Please come get me. Itâs cold.
