The first card was the Five of Swords—an image of two people walking off in separate directions. To me this was a sign that I felt disconnected from the illustrator, which was leading me to feel disconnected from the deck. The second card was the Three of Cups—three women dancing together and celebrating. Immediately, I knew I needed to create a stronger three-party collaboration between the publisher, the illustrator, and myself, so that I could feel a closer connection to the deck.

Next, I explored each option. On the left-hand side, I drew three cards for Option A—the option of pressing pause on the project. I drew the Page of Swords reversed (I would be making a reactive, impulsive decision), the Eight of Swords (I would be digging a deeper hole for myself), and the Emperor (while I might be acting “boss” by pausing the project, was this really the energy I wanted to create?).

On the right-hand side, I drew three more cards for Option B—suggesting greater collaboration with the illustrator as we moved into the next phases of the project. I drew the Judgement reversed (my fear of being judged and criticized for the deck), Death (an indication that change was imminent, and we could start afresh), and perhaps the most illuminating card of all, the Page of Cups reversed (a sign that I needed to connect more deeply with my vision for the deck before I started reviewing the individual cards).

You’ll notice the meanings I’m sharing are not the kinds you’d find in a book. This is why I love intuitively reading the Tarot cards—because you integrate the images of the cards and your subconscious mind to create deeper connections with what the cards mean for you. With this approach, there is a beautiful extraction of meaning that occurs. You already know, deep down, the best answer or the best path forward, but the Tarot cards help to bring this into your conscious mind. Pretty cool, huh!?

Finally, I drew one more card: What do I need to do/think/feel/be to make the right decision? It was the Sun reversed—a sign that I needed to cultivate a radiant, positive energy around this project and connect with my solar plexus to fully understand my best path forward.

So, I stepped away from my Tarot cards and meditated. I imagined a bright yellow light around my solar plexus chakra, and I experienced a feeling of strength and inner power that would help me make the right decision and go about it in a positive, constructive way. I tuned in to my intuition and asked what would best serve my Highest Good: Option A or Option B? In my heart, I knew that this Tarot deck needed to be birthed into the world and that it would play a very special role, not just in my life, but in the lives of the many people who would use it. I knew I needed to have a more open collaboration with the publisher and artist. But most importantly, I knew I needed to get crystal clear about my vision for the deck.
