CHAPTER ELEVEN
âIâM STARVED AND I was noble today, so I get the first helping.â Arlie snatched the lasagna pan from Hollyâs hands.
Holly looked down her perky nose at her sister. âI was passing it to Jack. Heâs company.â
âNo, heâs not. Heâs Jack.â Gianna passed the bread sticks. âYou girls behave yourselves.â
âTell us about it,â Holly said when theyâd said grace and Arlieâs mouth was full. âWhat was it like?â
Jack saw the concern in Giannaâs expression. He winked at Holly. âShe was brave. Hardly cried at all.â
Holly nodded solemn assent. âThatâs good. Usually she throws such a fit.â
Arlie swallowed visibly. âI do not.â The look she gave Jack should have seared off his eyebrows. âIt was all right. I was drowsy most of the time.â
She told them what she remembered. Jack filled in what she didnât, and Holly ad-libbed just to keep things entertaining.
âThere was a great nurse there, named Leo.â Arlie helped herself to more lasagna. âIf I ever went back to midwifery, Iâd like to work with her.â
Something in her voice, an eagerness that was more than likely unconscious, slipped under Jackâs skin. He looked at Gianna and Holly and realized he wasnât the only one whoâd heard it.
âYou want to do that, donât you?â Holly skipped a second helping of lasagna but took two bread sticksâone of them straight from her sisterâs plate.
âNo.â But it was still there. That itch in her voice that made Jack think of the look in her eyes when she told him about A Womanâs Place. She said it again, her voice firmer. âNo.â She took back her bread stick.
He wondered who she was trying to convince. Unless it was herself, he didnât think it was working.
âGlennis came in after the procedure.â Arlie wiped her lips and met her stepmotherâs eyes across the table.
Gianna laid down her fork. âShe did?â
âYou never told me she was drunk the night of the accident.â
Gianna hesitated, then nodded. âI know.â
âIt was bad enough she couldnât come because she was too upset and too far away. But drunk?â There was an underlying tremor in her voice now.
âI never thought sheâd tell you, and I didnât think you needed anything to make matters worse.â Gianna took her time speaking, rubbing the tines of her fork over and over with her napkin. âI didnât think you knowing she was drunk that night would help you in any way. It doesnât make it right that I didnât tell you, but in my mind youâd been my child for ten years. I didnât care at all what happened to her. Except for the fact that she gave birth to you, I probably still donât.â
âBut sheâs an alcoholic.â Arlie lifted despairing hands. âOne more wonderful branch on the family tree.â
âThat occurred to me,â Gianna admitted. âLater on, anyway. Iâve been critical of her for not telling you about the breast cancer in her family, but I should have made you aware that drinking might be a problem, too. Not that you ever drink much, Arlie, but I suppose the tendency might be there.
