CHAPTER TWENTY
Monday, September 18
Monday morning everyone seemed preoccupied, even our clients. Parker and Tyler were anxious over what theyâd witnessed during last nightâs game. In fact, several of us were. Was Corey going to be okay? I sure hoped so.
âTheyâre saying itâs his hamstring,â Tyler explained as he looked up from his phone. âAccording to this article, they think heâll be rehabbed and go right back to the game. But theyâre saying it might be a couple weeks or more.â
âI feel terrible for him.â Mari sighed. âHe lost his mom, he lost his dog, heâs really been through it.â
I felt sick every time I thought about our decision not to return Ginger to him that first day. If we had done that, she wouldnât have disappeared twenty-four hours later. She would be in his house in Houston, probably curled up in his lap right now, bringing the comfort that only a dog could bring.
Before diving into my work, I texted a quick HOPE YOUâRE OKAY.
To which he responded, WILL BE. WITH TIME.
I responded with the praying hands emoji.
Around noon Trina stopped by to talk to Mari. I happened to be in the break room with Mari when they were meeting. I offered to leave, but they both insisted it was fine to stay put.
âHey, I wanted to let you know to be on the lookout for that reporter who was here the other day.â
âWhich one?â Mari said. âThere were a bunch of them.â
âLance the Legend. Heâs kind of tall, has sandy-colored hair. Nice looking.â
âYeah, definitely remember Lance the Legend.â Mari laughed. âThe one with the fake hair. Why am I supposed to be on the lookout for him?â
âI donât know.â Trina eased her way down in a chair at the table next to us. âHe somehow got my new address and showed up outside our gate this morning. Wyatt gave him the boot.â
âHow in the world did he get your information?â Mari asked.
Wrinkles formed on Trinaâs brow. âI have no idea. None whatsoever.â
âTrina, I didnât give it to him, if thatâs what youâre thinking. I would never do that.â
âNone of us would,â I chimed in.
âNo!â Trina put her hand up. âIâm not saying that. I know that heâs slippery. Iâve dealt with him before. And I know itâs easy for people to find addresses online these days.â
âYeah, I do it all the time,â Mari said. âA paid service.â
So, that answered that question. Mari had turned into a supersleuth.
âYouâve dealt with Lance the Legend before?â I directed this question to Trina.
âYep.â She nodded. âKind of hoped to avoid him once I moved to Texas, but I guess thatâs impossible. He really gets around.â
Cassidy and Brianna chose this moment to join us for their lunch breaks.
âAre we interrupting?â Brianna asked.
âWe can always eat in my office,â Cassidy said.
âNo, please stay,â I countered.
âWeâre talking about Lance the Legend,â Mari explained.
âUgh, I canât stand that guy.â Cassidy opened the refrigerator and grabbed a meal from inside. âI stopped watching the news because of him.â She popped the meal into the nearby microwave and pressed some buttons.
