CHAPTER 56

Aunt Mandy called to give an update on her arrival. I couldn’t believe the time was finally here. What a brave eighty-year-old lady! I fussed around most of the day, baking, cooking, and arranging flowers to make her arrival feel special to her. I took time in the afternoon to call Maggie and wished her a happy birthday. It was last year when she and Carla arrived as my first guests, ready to celebrate our birthdays. This year would be different. I also reminded myself that I could call this the first anniversary of Josephine’s Guest House.

“Happy birthday, girlfriend!” I said when Maggie finally answered. “I miss you!”

She laughed. “The same to you, girlfriend!”

“So, are you and Mark celebrating?” I asked, feeling nostalgic.

“Nothing more than our usual dinner at the country club,” she said softly. “I wish Jill could be here, but she’s out of town on business.”

“Oh, that’s too bad. It was so great having all of you here for a couple of days. How are Marilee and Emily?”

“They are both complaining, but the best news is that Marilee’s condition is nothing serious,” Maggie explained. “You know what a fashion plate Emily is, so the cast is cramping her style.”

“I can imagine,” I said, picturing Emily in a cast.

“Is there any word on Carla?” I inquired next.

“Not really, but she surely has handled everything well. She has even gone back to some of her cleaning jobs.”

“I’m sure she’s thinking of her finances. By the way, I wanted to tell you that Aunt Mandy should arrive this evening. I think I’m ready. I want her to stay here with me until we have everything just right at the house. Emily has invited us to dinner at the winery tomorrow night if we’re still standing up from the move.”

“That is all so exciting!” Maggie said, interested. “I’m sorry we have to be apart this year for the first time. Tell your aunt that I’m really happy for her.”

After we hung up, I moved to the sunporch, where I felt sad and disconnected. Life was changing in many ways. I had to concentrate on Aunt Mandy. I was startled to hear someone knocking at the front door. From my seat on the sunporch, I didn’t see any vehicle in sight. I rushed to answer it and saw a delivery man standing on the other side of the oval glass door. I opened the door, and he asked for Kate Meyr before handing me a long box of flowers. I was sure I had not received flowers from anyone since I moved to Borna. I thanked him and closed the door, eager to discover the mystery. Inside, I discovered many long-stemmed red roses. What a sight to behold! The fragrance was overwhelming. I folded back the tissue to find a card that read, “Happy birthday, sweetheart! J.”

It was truly a surprise, but I was hardly his sweetheart! I quickly removed the card so no one else could read the message. I
