CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Allie

Saturday, August 1, 2015

“It’s been weeks, but I still can’t stop thinking about Feeney’s comment, his face when he asked about Tarek. His line of questioning was unexpected, and while I do think he’s wrong, he made some valid points.” I look down as the words come out, unsure what Court will say, but certain she’ll think I’m off my rocker.

“Allie…really? You think Tarek had something to do with this?”

“I don’t know, Court! I don’t know anything anymore.” I lay my head in my hands, holding back tears I know will come anyway. “I just want answers.”

“I know, honey, really. I do. I can’t begin to imagine what you’re going through, but leave it to the police. They’ll catch this guy.”

“It’s been six weeks…”

“It has. You’re right about that, but think about the evidence; the blood that doesn’t match Tarek, the fingerprints. How do you explain that if Tarek was involved?”

“I can’t. That’s just it; I can’t explain any of it, and it’s so frustrating. I just want this to be over.”

Court scoots closer and wraps her arm around me, pulling me close. I fight the tears, desperate to make it through one day without crying.

“I know you’ll disagree,” she starts, “but I think we should go out tonight. You and me, like old times.”

“Oh, I don’t know, I—”

“No excuses!” Court says, popping up from her seat on the couch. “You need this. You’ve been sitting around here doing next to nothing, stewing by yourself about this horrible thing that’s happened to you. And it is, it’s horrible. But, Allie, I miss you. I miss my friend, and I just want you to be happy. It’ll do you some good to get out.”

I shake my head no, but Court feigns ignorance. “Come on, I’ll even do your hair and make-up like old times.” She smirks and bats her eyelashes and I can’t help but giggle. She used to give me that look all the time, and it’s the first time I’ve seen it in a while. And then, because she knows she still hasn’t sold the idea, she says, “Diamond Back is playing…”

“You should have led with that.” I huff and fold my arms across my chest. “Fine. But let the record show that I’m doing this against my own will and better judgment.”

“Let the record show as well that I don’t give a damn,” Court counters, her hand on her hip. She winks and grabs my arm, pulling me off the couch and down the hall to my bedroom.

“Good luck finding anything other than sweatpants and T-shirts in there…” I say to Court as we stand in front of my closet. She winks and starts pulling garments off their hangers.

“Challenge accepted,” she says.
