Chapter Ten

Evan had been raised by a double dose of stubborn, yet he knew he wasn’t in the wrong for once. He didn’t think he was. Hell. Things weren’t so black and white now after the fact. He tied off the last piece of barbed wire as the sun scorched his back. Mending fences wasn’t glamourous work in the least, but it was a necessary evil. He’d had plenty of time to consider his options for a future over the last couple of days of manual labor.

“You got the whole west side done?”

He turned to see Dennis, the foreman of the ranch he worked on ride up on a gorgeous cream colored beauty named Sunny. “Yes, sir.”

Evan took his gloves off, tossing them toward the tail gate of the truck he’d driven through the pasture. His soul was drawn to animals and Sunny was a lover. She acted more as if she was human than horse, devouring affection and returning it with head buts and snorts to be petted more. Dennis left the reigns hanging after he got off the horse and went near the fence row. Evan continued to shower Sunny with praise for being so pretty and sweet.

“Out of all the ugly mugs on this ranch, she picks you?” Dennis chuckled. “Damn horse.”

“I’m the only one who knows where to scratch, right, Sunny, here, oh yeah, just like that. See, ya gotta know she has a ticklish spot by her ear, Dennis.”

“Some of the other hands would say you’re soft on her.”

“They’d be right, wouldn’t they, Sunny. You are my favorite girl.” He cooed, petting the horse and receiving her special wet nose rubs against his overgrown jaw in return.

“Listen, Taylor. I didn’t come out here to bust your balls about turning into a ten-year-old girl around this one horse. Rumor has it you went into the city.”

Evan’s chest tightened and he kept his gaze on Sunny’s back who’d laid her head on his shoulder. “Who told you that?”

Dennis was the foreman of the ranch and damn if the old fart didn’t have a way of knowing everything that went on, both on and off property. Evan respected the man, worked hard for him, sort of in thanks for letting him have a job and continue to train and compete. Not all bosses would bend so much. He knew.

“William. Ran into him at the feed store a couple of days ago.”

“Quinn? William Quinn told you I’d been in Boulder? Why?” There were more questions attached to that one little word. As in why would William care, why would he know, and who the hell had told him? The only person to have seen him—Spencer. A pang of loneliness stabbed him smack in the middle of his chest. They hadn’t spoken since Eagle Crown. They’d run into each other when he’d gone to Boulder, but no words were exchanged. Evan couldn’t let go of what he’d overheard at their last event. Was too scared to hear the truth, or what could have been the truth.
