The aftermath

In Troezen, Pittheus realized the meaning of the oracle and got Aegeus drunk so that he slept with Pittheus’ daughter Aethra. Their offspring was to become the great Athenian hero Theseus.

Medea made her way to Athens and married Aegeus. According to one version of the story, she had a son by him called Medus; another version has Medea conceive Medus by a barbarian father after she had departed from Athens.

There is a legend, not necessarily current in Euripides’ time, that Medea had to flee because when Theseus arrived in Athens as a grown young man, she tried to poison him, but Aegeus recognized him as his son just in time and prevented him from drinking the poisoned drink.

Medea travelled east to the area now known as Iran and Syria; she and her son Medus founded and ruled the nation of the Medes there.
