Ethan rested his head on his crooked elbow and gazed down at Brett, sleeping beside him. He was enraptured by her, by the beauty inside and out, and all he could think about in that moment was keeping her safe and happy. He’d insisted she spend the night, knowing everyone in the club knew where she lived and not trusting that she would be safe there.

She’d shown him her pistol and told him she’d be fine, but he’d refused to leave her alone. Brett had suggested he stay with her, but even if no one came after her, someone was likely watching her apartment. He didn’t want to be seen staying with her, considering they were trying to keep things on the down low until it was safe.

So, he’d coaxed her back into bed and made love to her until she was too weak to move and too tired to go home. Sure, it was cheating, but he didn’t feel the least bit guilty as he watched her eyelids flutter with whatever dream she was having. He would never have believed himself to be the romantic sort, but he found himself thinking about drawing up a bubble bath with rose petals and candles around the tub. Or riding out to the lake and having a picnic on the shore.

Jesus, he was falling hard and fast.

It wouldn’t be such a problem, except he couldn’t be with her all the time to guarantee her safety, and if anyone followed her here, they would figure out what was going on between the two of them. He needed more protection for her, and that meant getting Corey in on things. He wanted to avoid doing that. He knew how transparent it would be to Corey in terms of Ethan’s personal interest.

At the same time, if he didn’t let his club know what was going on, he’d cause more trouble for himself. He’d already pushed enough buttons, and while he still disagreed with Corey’s stance on things, he honestly didn’t want to lose his place with the Devil’s Flames. Rocky had said there were some things worth fighting for, and Ethan agreed wholeheartedly when it came to the decisions he’d made so far. But was it worth risking Brett’s safety, as well as being cast out, to go out on his own here?

Laying here, indecisive, wouldn’t get him anywhere, that much he knew. But he kept coming up short when trying to figure out which way the scales tipped. He wanted to sleep on it, try to get his brain to stop churning, and he curled an arm around Brett, spooning against her and letting the warmth of her body and the feel of her curves seduce him, this time not into pleasure but into slumber.

It worked, but his eyes popped open at six, and he was wide awake. Brett woke, too, an early riser. She smiled at him as he stumbled around, tripping over the clothes they’d thrown off last night. “Are your eyes even open?” she asked with humor in her tone.
