Autumn

It was almost impossible to keep my mind on my work. How was I supposed to care about filing books and answering questions from the archive patrons when all I wanted was to be in Zakyra's arms so that I could forget the world and lose myself in her.

My mind whirled with sensation and desire, I wanted her—more than I'd ever known I could want something. I knew she was afraid to give in to what she wanted—but she was walking a dangerous line between what was expected of her, and what her heart truly desired.

I could only hope, maybe foolishly, that she would choose me. That she would choose her heart over what her father might dictate. The thought of her trapped in a loveless marriage that had been arranged without her consent drove me mad with frustration.

I wanted to save her from that life—but what did I have to offer? A drafty room in the archive tower filled with dusty books and threadbare carpets? She didn't deserve that.

Maybe we were too different.

But when we were together, it didn't matter. Nothing mattered.

"Archivist?"

"Mm?" I snapped out of my thoughts as one of the junior archivists approached. "What is it?"

"Someone is asking for a scroll—and I don't know where to find it," she said. "Are you all right?"

"Fine," I said. "Just... thinking about some books that need to be taken for repair."

The junior archivist chatted brightly about nothing of consequence, and thankfully she didn't seem to notice that I only replied in one word or just a mumbled noise.

"What is it that you're looking for?" I asked suddenly.

"Oh— I'm looking for a scroll on—" she paused as though trying to recall what she needed. "The ancient port cities of Evermore," she finished brightly.

"The port cities," I repeated.

"Indeed," she said. "I couldn't find them in the usual spot—"

"Who is looking for it?"

The girl blinked at me. "One of the patrons."

My eyes narrowed. "Which one?"

I knew every single patron who frequented the archives, and none of them had ever shown any interest in the history of the port cities. Even the ones who rattled on about ships and shipbuilding wouldn't have asked for that topic.

"I— I don't know her name," she finished lamely.

"Her?"

"I—" her eyes darted frantically. "Lady Blackmore, I believe."

She was lying to me. There was no Lady Blackmore, but she didn't need to know that I was aware of such things. "Indeed. Well, let's not keep her waiting."

The junior archivist seemed relieved as she followed me through the stacks toward the relevant area of the archives. "Did Lady Blackmore tell you why she needed this particular scroll?" I asked casually. I paused in front of a shelf and made a show of looking for the correct scroll. I knew precisely where it was, but I had a suspicion that I needed to be confirmed.

"No," she replied, "but I didn't ask. Should I ask the patrons why they want something when they ask?"

Her question was innocent enough. She was a new addition to the archive staff, and I knew that she wanted to do her job well.
