I dragged the unconscious spy through the moonlit gardens, my heart pounding in my chest. The cold air stung my cheeks as I struggled to keep my grip on his limp body. I had been careful not to be seen by any of the castle guards, knowing full well that if they caught me, it would only raise suspicion.

How would I explain this?

My plan was simple: hide the spy in the dungeons until I could gather more evidence against my brother Vorigan. It had seemed like a good plan at the time, but now that I was so close, doubt gripped me.

The spy was heavy, dead weight in my arms, and I grunted as he tumbled from my arms and landed in a heap on the path.

"Going somewhere, little sister?" a voice hissed from the shadows.

I froze, my stomach twisting into knots as I recognized the tone dripping with venom. Vorigan stepped out from behind a large, dark rose bush, his eyes narrowed and fixed on me.

"Vorigan," I spat, my fingers curling around the hilt of my dagger. "What do you want?"

"Is that any way to greet your dearest blood?" he sneered, slowly circling me like a predator stalking its prey. "Especially when you've been so busy betraying our family."

He glanced down at the unconscious spy and I thought I saw surprise on his face, but it was gone in an instant.

I couldn't let him see my fear, so I forced a laugh. "Betrayal? You've always had an overactive imagination, Vorigan."

"Then who is that?"

I kicked the unconscious spy. "A drunk," I said. "Caught him pissing on the castle wall. Thought I'd do the guards a favor and bring him in."

"You're a terrible liar, sister," Vorigan said. His smile was cruel. "You've been negotiating with rebels. Trying to undermine everything our family has built."

My heart raced, and I knew I had to deflect somehow. "That's absurd," I replied, feigning nonchalance. "You don't know what you're talking about."

He pointed at the unconscious man at my feet. "How do I know that's not a rebel spy that you're trying to sneak into the castle? How do I know that isn't an assassin who will make an attempt on our father's life!"

Was that what our father truly feared?

I wanted to shout at him, but I couldn't give my plan away.

"You're insane," I scoffed. "Why would I risk everything for a group of rebels?"

"Maybe because of your precious little whore?" he snarled, his anger bubbling to the surface.

"Leave Aurelia out of this!" I shouted and my grip on the dagger tightened.

"Ah, so she is involved," he said with a sinister smile. "Maybe I should pay her a visit after I'm done with you."

"Touch her and I'll kill you," I hissed through clenched teeth.

"Feisty," he taunted, his eyes narrow. "But you're out of your depth, Raelinn. You can't stop me."

"Watch me," I whispered as I drew my dagger.

Vorigan lunged at me with an animalistic snarl. His sword sliced through the air like a razor blade and I barely managed to sidestep in time.
