WINTER JAXSON

STELLAR DATE: 02.19.8938 (Adjusted Years)

LOCATION: Salvage ship Dauntless, Valhalla Station, Jericho

REGION: Gedri System, Silstrand Alliance

<Another successful haul, Dauntless. Should I expect the usual token of your appreciation,> Benny, the salvage yard manager at Valhalla Station asked.

Kylie smiled as she responded from her seat at the communications console. <Of course, Benny, I value your services as much as you value my patronage.>

<Glad to hear it, and yes, I do—not like you have any other place you can bring your salvage to, but I appreciate the sentiment,> Benny replied before killing the connection.

“Bring us down to Laerdo Station, Rogers,” Kylie addressed her pilot.

“Yes, Captain, with pleasure! I’m not sure about you, but I could use some grub. Bacon, cheese, maybe some meat.”

“Bacon is meat.”

Rogers laughed. “I mean meat. Succulent, tender, woman breasts.”

Kylie shook her head. “Been too long since you’ve seen some action? Never mind. Don’t answer that.” She knew the answer. If it had been five minutes, it had been too long for Rogers. It wasn’t that he was a sexual addict, or even a deviant. He just loved woman.

She and Rogers had been a two-person team for a while now, and they worked well together. They got along, they both loved the Dauntless and they had fallen into a good rhythm. Kylie didn’t want to mess that up, but getting another crew member on board could be useful—maybe one who was better at firing a weapon than his mouth, too.

“The type of action I’m looking for they’re going to have to wash my mouth out with soap afterward.” Rogers turned and winked from the pilot’s chair.

Kylie gave a rueful sigh. “Mine too after I visit with Maverick.”

Rogers didn’t respond, but she saw that by the slump of his shoulders he felt for her. Their shared silence lasted the final hour into the docks at Laerdo Station. Once the station had made a secure grapple, and the umbilical was latched on, Rogers dropped out of his chair onto the bridge’s deck.

“Time to face the music,” Kylie said as she rose and walked with him off the bridge.

Rogers caught her eye, his expression saying more than words ever could. “You sure you have to see him?”

“Until I can pay him what I owe him for this ship, I don’t have a choice. It’s a condition of my freedom.”

“Then you’re not really free, are you?” Rogers was right about that, but it wasn’t as though she had any choice.
