Chapter Twenty-Seven

BISHOP

The yawn threatened to swallow Bishop whole. She rubbed her eyes, staring at the monitors. She’d spent the day working through a gunrunning case. It turned out to be a little bit more complicated than planned. But finally she got all the information and enough evidence for a search warrant of the company’s US holdings in Portland. And with that information, she’d made both the CIA and the FBI happy, a decidedly rare accomplishment.

That meant she could finally get back to work on Nola’s case. She stood up and stretched her back, stepping out of the cage and walking over to the kitchen underneath her loft. The fridge had few options, which wasn’t surprising.

She grabbed the pizza box from last night and placed it on the counter. After turning on the toaster oven, she grabbed two slices and put them on the tray before sliding them in. She grabbed some water and refilled her water container.

She needed to cut down on the caffeine or she was never going to sleep tonight. But at the same time, she could really use a jolt. She took a sip of the water and then pushed the water aside. That’s not going to cut it.

She went back to the fridge and pulled out a Diet Pepsi. Pulling a glass from the cabinet, she poured the soda in, adding some ice. She took a sip and let out a sigh. That’s better.

After another few minutes, she grabbed the pizza from the toaster oven. It wasn’t extremely warm, but it would have to do. She hated microwaving pizza. Something about it just seemed wrong.

Balancing her plate on her arm, she walked back to the cage and opened the door with one hand. She placed her food and drink back on the desk before turning and closing the door. After sitting down in her seat, she realized she’d forgotten napkins.

She groaned, looking back across the warehouse. Too far. A quick search through her desk came up with two unused napkins in the back of her top drawer. She placed them on the counter and then grabbed a slice of pizza and took a bite. The mix of cheese, spices, and tomato sauce swirled around in her mouth, and she sighed.

She could live on pizza. If she were stranded on a desert island and only had one food that she was allowed to bring, without a doubt, she would choose pizza.

With a sip of her drink, she hit a few buttons on her keyboard. Searches related to Nola’s case flashed across the screens. Taking a few more bites, she contentedly watched the information, seeing what was going on.

The news had released information that the two “police officers” were not that at all. It appeared that they had also stolen the squad car from a garage that did repairs for the police department, as Bishop had suspected. The uniforms had come from the police station. Apparently they had an inside man.

Chiefs of both the Massapequa and Hempstead Police
