Buzz. Buzz.

The next morning, I awaken to the sound of Enzo’s cell phone vibrating on my wooden nightstand. I glance over at him and he’s sound asleep. He looks so peaceful I decide not to wake him.

But I should check his phone, just in case it’s his work.

Quietly I roll over and reach for his cell. Glancing at the screen I see a text message from a person labeled as “supervisor”.

Supervisor: Sorry Money Bags, had to tell The Boss about the hold up on his cash. Don’t know where you’re hiding but unless you bring the money back, I’d stay out of sight.

What is this?

Bring the money back? Stay out of sight? What does this mean? What kind of bank does Enzo work for?

Enzo shifts under the blankets and startles me. I hurriedly put his phone back on the nightstand and close my eyes, pretending to be asleep. I squint and see him roll out of the bed and quietly check his phone.

“Shit,” he whispers.

I open my eyes and look up at him with a smile. I don’t want him to think I’m snooping around, so I play it cool in hopes that he will offer up the information.

“Is everything alright?” I say.

He bends down and kisses me on the forehead.

“Yes,” he says. “Just a slight problem at work. I need to go.”

He rushes to put on his clothes.

“What bank do you work at again?” I ask. “I can’t remember if you told me.”

Enzo pauses for a brief moment and looks me in the eyes. “I’m sorry sweetheart, I’m late. I’ve got to go.”

My curiosity peaks as he suspiciously hustles out the front door and avoids the question. I throw the blankets off me and march straight to my laptop. Turning it on, I pull up the internet and search for the list of all bankers in this city.

I scroll through page after page and not one banker in this city is named Enzo.

He’s lied to me.

Feeling panicky, I type his name in the search bar along with the zip code for the city. My finger hovers over the “enter” button and my heart beats out of my chest. Who is he really?

“Here goes nothing,” I whisper to myself and click the button.

My jaw drops and my eyes widen as I stare at the first result on the screen. There it is in plain sight. My vision narrows and focuses on a picture of Enzo with a caption underneath it that reads:

Enzo, AKA “Money Bags”, an associate of the Risottini mafia. Money collector for The Boss.

The article continues to elaborate on his life but I can’t bear to read anymore. I slam my computer shut and tears well up in my eyes.

Enzo works with the mafia but it’s too late.

I’m in love him. How could I let myself fall for someone that’s a part of everything I’m against?

I must never see him again.
