Chapter Sixteen

Seaton looked up when Meredith strode into the room. “What? You look like someone’s just kicked you in the nuts.”

“I feel like it. He saw her,” Meredith replied.

“Yes, we know that, you’ll have to be more specific.”

“He saw her the night before. With a man. The street was empty. She didn’t look happy. Is that specific enough for you?” Meredith asked.

“Fuck me.” Seaton leaned back in his chair and linked his hands on the top of his head.

“One way of putting it. Get a lineup sorted. I want photos of our four men, and as many others as you can find that look similar, and anyone else who we know was in that restaurant that night that we’ve got an image of. Shuffle them and give me a shout. I’ll be outside for a minute before going back in. Text me when it’s ready. Don’t interrupt, he’s a jumpy sod. Once I get him talking, I want him to keep going. Loopy, shut your mouth, you look gormless.” Meredith disappeared into the stationery cupboard for a moment before leaving them to it.

“He’s smoking again,” Linda said.

“He’s never really stopped, my sweet. Photographs, please.” Trump walked to stand behind her. “Tom, any suggestions?”

Ten minutes and two cigarettes later, Meredith walked back in. Hitting the record button, he announced the interview had recommenced.

“I’m going to trust you, Jason. Don’t make me look stupid. I’ve got the team pulling together a photo lineup, but first I want you to tell me what you remember.”

Jason shrugged. “I’ve told you.”

“No, you’ve only given me the headlines. Tell me what you saw in detail.”

“Um, okay.” Squires was silent for mere seconds. “Except I didn’t stick around. There is no detail. I’m a coward. I didn’t want him to see me looking.”

“There you go. We’re off and running. You know she looked at you. What did she do before that? Let’s start at the beginning, and taking all the time you need, tell me what happened. You were on your way home and …”
