Isabelle’s white, ashen face lifts from staring at the stainless-steel table I was sitting at mere weeks ago during my own arrest when she hears the door creak open. Her big chocolate eyes are clouded with doubt, and her pupils are large. Her breath catches in her throat, muffling the loud sob that comes painfully erupting out of her slowly panting chest when her eyes lock in on me. The weight on my chest becomes crippling from the defeated look tainting her beautiful, rich eyes that peek out from behind the curtain of hair hanging in front of her face.

She abruptly stands from her chair, sending it flying backward with a scraping noise before it topples onto the polished floors. Tears form in her eyes at a rapid pace when she attempts to rush towards me but is held back by the shackles tightly encasing her delicate wrists and feet. Blood surges through my veins, and my body becomes heated with a fiery warmth. My furious gaze flicks to Ryan standing next to me. His eyes widen and his jaw muscle spasms when he too notices they have Isabelle shackled and chained to the table like an animal.

Ryan’s angry gaze moves to a young male officer in command in the corner of the room. He is standing tall with his arms behind his back. His gaze remains focused on a spot on the wall across from him. His stance reminds me of a toy soldier about to go into battle. The only thing giving away his impressive stature is the fact his thigh muscle quivered the instance I entered the room. I can also smell his fear plaguing the air around us.

“Get those cuffs off her immediately!” Ryan demands, his surly tone rumbling through the room.

The young officer’s eyes float from the wall to glance at Ryan. “T-t-they said she had to stay shackled. She is an FBI agent; she is dangerous,” he babbles with his eyes shifting nervously between Ryan and me.

“She is a fucking human being,” Ryan snarls angrily, stealing the words right out of my mouth.

The officer swallows harshly when Ryan steps closer to him. Because they are similar heights, Ryan can stare straight into his desolate green eyes. “Get them off her now, before I shackle you in her place.”

The young officer’s head bobs up and down like a bobble-head toy. His legs shudder as he makes his way to the table Isabelle is standing next to. His hands shake as he removes a set of steel keys out of his pocket. His fumbling movements cause him to drop the keys onto the ground near Isabelle’s shoeless feet. Her defeated eyes remain on me as he crouches down in front of her to gather the keys before unlocking the shackles from her ankles. I shift to the side of the room so I can maintain eye contact with her when he moves to open the ones encasing her wrists.

The instant the final cuff is removed from her wrist, she dashes towards me.
