CHAPTER 21

July 12, night

Four days. That's all it took for the killer to strike again.

Nardi had predicted it. He knew that more blood would be shed. He was just waiting for it to happen after Juliana Petrescu’s murder.

He expected it, in other words, but certainly not like this: same place, same time – a real slap in the face for him and the entire police force.

Having gotten out of the car, he has the impression that he is witnessing a bad replica of a show already seen. The gloomy environment and that stench of death hovering in the air, the high walls towering over the scene like a silent witness. Everything appears identical. A surreal atmosphere into which he ventures with small steps while continuing to look around perplexed. Apparently, the guy he is chasing is far crazier than expected. He knew he could not stop him in time, just as he was sure the man would shed more blood. However, he did not imagine that this one would go that far. After what happened, surveillance in the area was intensified, patrol cars doubled, and yet, it was not enough to stop him. He risked getting caught just to throw down a gauntlet.

Unfortunately, Faruq's help was of little use. Although video footage confirmed that the suspect was driving a black Panda with a broken front light, the license plate had been adequately concealed. In addition, in all shots, the driver kept his head bent over the steering wheel to hide his face. There was no way to trace the vehicle, let alone the person driving it.

The autopsy on the first victim did not help much either. Besides confirming what the medical examiner had expected, it determined that what was found in the lungs was fresh water, tap water, to be exact. Based on hardness, between calcium and magnesium concentration, and the remaining chemical parameters, forensic analysts were able to determine its source. Despite this, the attempt to confine the investigation to a specific area soon proved to be a vain hope. The Peschiera aqueduct is the largest in Rome, and about seventy percent of the water poured into the capital's water network every day comes from there.

Every road seems to lead to a dead end in this case! That's not all. To add insult to injury, Massimo's gaze falls on the marker tapes placed to mark the area. New ones have been put up to replace the ones from last time, which are now scattered on the ground, useless. The culprit must have torn them off as he passed by, and who knows if it was the victim's own body that dragged them along.

Just ahead, Stefanini is engaged in conversation with some forensic men. He points to the right and left, giving directions on what to do.

"Have you discovered anything?" Nardi asks as he walks past him.

"Hey, about time!" his friend exclaims when he sees him. "No, nothing new so far. The footprints on the ground look the same, and so do the tire tracks.
