Figure 51: Flehman Response

As humans with limited olfactory abilities, it’s difficult for us to understand just how well animals can smell complex chemical messages in the air, and how much their world revolves around this. This also means that essential oils have an even more powerful effect on them than they do on humans.

Aromatherapy vs Zoopharmacognosy

Aromatherapy is different from zoopharmacognosy: aromatherapy is intended exclusively for humans, while zoopharmacognosy is exclusively for animals.

The two are used and applied in distinct ways. For example, you should never consider giving your animal a massage with oils. Not only would you make their coat dirty, but you would be forcing a remedy on them, possibly causing great distress, rather than giving them the opportunity to walk away.
