In the southwest precinct, a cab driver blubbered and mimed his way through what happened, stopping to go off on occasional tangents about how the city used to be safe and how he’d been driving a cab for fifteen years without a problem.

He blamed the city for the homeless problem, he blamed the homeless for the increase in the crime rate, and he blamed the police for everything else.

“Okay, slow down,” the officer attempting to take his statement said. “What happened after they shot the side mirror?”

“Excuse me?” a smooth voice interrupted. The officer and the cab driver looked up to see a man in an expensive suit looking like he was fresh for the day after a good sleep and morning swim, even though it was still only four in the morning.

“I’d like a moment with my client, please,” he said, producing a business card. “I’ve been sent by the Seattle Taxi Association.”

The cop, grateful for the interruption, waved his permission.

“Have at it.”

“In private, please,” the lawyer said.
