MOLLY

Half an hour later, after Tommy and Zack had been told that in order to receive their food and bedding supplies, they’d need to sign up for ‘unloading duty’, they flopped down on their mats and Tommy held onto the paper bag of food they’d been given.

“What did they assign you?” Molly had left Becky at the Lost and Found board and had positioned her own mat next to Tommy’s. She’d been on her feet all day and needed a break. Remembering all the times she’d complained about how her feet hurt after a full day teaching classes, she almost laughed at herself; back then, she’d had no idea what true exhaustion felt like.

“Unloading, whatever that means,” Tommy replied, tightening his grip on the brown paper bag in his lap.

“It means retrieving stuff from the carts outside—boxes, bags, and crates, whatever else they’ve looted—and bringing them inside to be sorted,” Molly explained. “There’s a classroom down the hall behind the gym where they’re unpacking it all.”

“And then what happens to it?” Tommy asked.

Molly exchanged a look with Lucky, who was opening up his own bag of evening food rations. “Who the heck knows? We don’t see it,” he replied.

Trying to change the subject, because Diego’s men were patrolling up and down and she didn’t want any of them to get into trouble, Molly gestured to Tommy’s ration bag and smiled as if they were in the school cafeteria. “Anything good?”

Tommy handed the bag to his brother, and Zack reached inside it. He took out a battered looking apple, a protein bar, and a bottle of water, then looked at Tommy. “Where’s your stuff?”

“We’re sharing tonight, buddy,” Tommy said, as if it was no big deal.

“We only got one bag between us?”

“We’ll get more tomorrow morning, after we’ve worked.” Tommy’s jaw twitched with irritation as he replied, but he was hiding it well in front of his brother. “You eat them. I’ve lost my appetite.”

Molly’s bag contained the same, an apple and a protein bar, but with the addition of a candy bar too. She handed it to Tommy. “Never been a fan,” she said, tucking into her apple.

She expected him to rib her for that. Not a fan of candy? Are you even human? But instead Tommy simply took the candy bar and ripped it open. He did not smile. He was quietly fuming. Molly could feel it vibrating on his skin.

“You okay?” she asked quietly.

“I spent ten years in prison and never got treated as badly as this.” Tommy ripped a chunk from the end of the candy bar and chewed it as if it tasted disgusting. “They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it.”

“No, they shouldn’t,” Molly said quietly, willing Tommy to keep his voice down.

After a long pause, Tommy took a long drink from Zack’s water bottle and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. Looking over at the gym mats in the corner, he narrowed his eyes at Diego. “Who is that guy, anyway?”

“He was a volunteer firefighter,” Lucky answered through a mouthful of apple.
