Beyond Primary Production

Household food involves not only primary production (e.g., growing beans or tomatoes) but also preservation, processing, storage, and cooking. The question here is how can one make better use of what is available to the household?

• Household water catchment methods can help to provide water that is needed for food production and other household uses.

• Composting and other means for enriching the soil can sharply increase productivity.

• Vermiculture, which is raising worms with organic wastes, can be used for improving soils.

• Snail farming can be useful in several ways (http://www.agromisa.org/agrobriefs/3-snail-farming.pdf).

• Food preservation techniques of various kinds are important, especially where primary productivity varies a great deal from season to season. Methods would include fermentation, pickling, drying, and canning, among others.

• Child feeding requires special attention. In many situations, breastfeeding practices are sub-optimal, and breastfeeding techniques can be improved. Breastfeeding support organizations exist in many countries, and many of these are linked to the International Lactation Consultant Association (http://www.ilca.org). Also, there are often possibilities for improving complementary foods as the child grows and is ready for foods other than breast milk.

• Cooking methods can be improved in many situations. For example, there are interesting possibilities for solar cooking, an approach that can be especially important where fuel is scarce and sunshine is abundant. Some organizations help low-income people to obtain solar cookers or show them how to make fuel-efficient baked-earth ovens.

• Gadgets of various kinds can help. Some can be produced locally, or purchased at low cost. For example, in some places, peanut shelling machines can be very useful (Full Belly Project 2008).
