Their purpose will be to totally annihilate Israel before Christ comes to establish His kingdom. At the time of Christ's return, angels will have been flying above the earth, preaching the Gospel for more than three years. (Revelation 14.) It is also possible that as the angels fly through the heavens they will be proclaiming that Christ is coming to set up His kingdom. If that happens, there is no doubt that there will be TV cameras all over the mountains and valleys around Jerusalem to broadcast Christ's return.

WHEN JESUS RETURNS TO EARTH

When Christ descends on Mount Olivet, the mountain will split in half from the east to the west. Then, half will shift north and the other half south, creating a valley all the way to Jerusalem. The people in the city will flee to the valley to avoid total destruction by the Antichrist and his armies. God will protect Israel from certain destruction and gather her together again.

Compare these accounts in the following Scriptures:

Matthew 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Micah 4:6 In that day, saith the Lord, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted;

7 And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever.

Compare the above Scriptures with Isaiah 11:11-12:

11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

In Matthew 24:29-30 Jesus did a marvelous job of pointing us to Revelation 19:11-21 and Zechariah 14:1-4, which are other prophetic utterances of the same event He described. These verses should leave no doubt that it is the Day of the Lord. The prophet Zechariah gives an overall view of this event.

Zechariah 14:1 Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
