• Give early. “Pay it forward” by doing favors before you need favors back—if you ever need favors back at all. It’s obvious and less powerful when there’s a clear link between what you’re doing and what you want back—that’s a transaction, not a favor.
• Give often and generously. “As you sow, so shall you reap.” If you give a lot, you’ll also get a lot. If you give high-quality favors, you will get high-quality favors back, so do people favors that make a difference.
• Give unexpectedly. Richard Branson, the chairman of the Virgin Group, and I once spoke at the same conference in Moscow. I met him in the speaker’s lounge, and he asked me if I ever flew on Virgin. I told him I didn’t because I was a United Airlines customer. At that point, he got on his knees and gave me a shoeshine with his coat, and since then my first choice for any route that Virgin America flies is this airline.
