Chapter 3

Raf looked out the window to see Angel talking with his grandfather and waved his hand up and down to his wife and mother-in-law. “He’s here!”

Sheila hopped and grinned, lighting the candle on the cake she decorated. “It’s ready! Mama, hurry!”

Gran shuffled along the floor with the turkey on their best white platter in her hands to set it next to the cake. “Call him before your dad bores him into sleeping.”

Raf grinned wider. “Yeah, call him in.”

Sheila wiped her hands on her jeans, stopped long enough to kiss her husband and then opened the front door. “Hey Angel, Dad, come in!”

Angel waved at her and helped his grandpa to his feet, walking with him slowly to the front door. Raf stood behind his wife, rubbing his hands over her arms as she leaned back on him. “Gonna miss him.”

“Me, too. Kinda wish he was still the little asshole like when we were first married.”

She laughed and recalled, “That time he put red peppers in your spaghetti? You drank the whole gallon of milk.”

Raf remembered. He hated hot food and made the mistake of telling his stepson that. “Burned my mouth for an hour.”

“He loves you, now, you know?”

“I know.”

Angel made it to the door and Sheila grabbed her son’s arm, dragging him in as Raf helped Norman Quintana inside, the old man refused to use the walker he was given for his gout. Together the men watched the women clap and squeal as they presented Angel his surprise, a meal fit for a king and a huge cake that had the words, “Congratulations, Angel,” in bright green icing on top. Angel smiled, but he didn’t look as enthused as Raf thought he would. He whispered to Norman, “What’s going on with him?”

“I think he’s homesick.”

Raf blinked at his father-in-law. “He’s not gone yet.”

“In his heart, he’s been gone a long time.”

Jim Jam found him on top of the ridge south of town. He didn’t say a word, simply sitting next to him on the red boulder and folding his hands in his lap.

Garcia felt like his world was coming to an end. He’d been stupid, telling Angel how he felt. Like that was going to stop his friend from leaving or something. He thought, though…when Angel kissed him…that he felt the same as Garcia. Stupid.

“You okay?” Jim Jam finally spoke and Garcia shrugged. “I, uh…I was worried about how you were going to take it. I knew he was telling you today, so I…I went to the pond.”

Garcia’s heart dropped to his feet and he stiffened with the thoughts running through his head. “The pond?” Jim Jam squirmed and Garcia knew, then, that Jim Jam had seen. “Don’t tell nobody.”

“Never, man.”

He didn’t have to ask him to promise. Jim Jam would never tell a soul, he knew that. “Can I stay with you a couple days?”

Jim nodded once, but said, “What about graduation?”

“Not going.”

“Okay, then.”

*~*~*

As Angel stood on the stage accepting his diploma, his heart wasn’t there with him.
