Chapter 9
Back in the Blazer, I clicked my seatbelt and waited for Grant to say something as he pulled out of the circle driveway.
âWell, that was awkward,â Grant said.
I chuckled. âYes, it was. And itâs only going to get worse for the Nights and Songbirds.â
Grant glanced over at me. âWhaddya mean? And why are you smiling?â
My mouth dropped open. âOh, câmon? Tell me you donât see what is going on there?â
Grant frowned. âI donât know what you mean.â
âBrenna and Kyle?â
âWhat about them?â he asked. âYou mean the fact theyâre going to have to carry on the centuries-long feud?â
I laughed. âNo! I mean theyâre in love. Itâs a true Romeo and Juliet story.â
âWhat? No way.â Grant frowned. âHow did you get that?â
I snickered. âHave you never been in love before, Detective Wolfe?â
And just like that, the air seemed to leave the car.
âGrant?â I whispered.
He cleared his throat. âNo, Serena, Iâve never been in love before.â
An awkward silence filled the car, and we drove on for a few more miles.
âIâm sorry,â I said. âI just assumedâyou know?â
âWhat? That Iâve been in love before?â
I let out a soft snort. âWell, yeah. I mean, youâre almost thirty.â
He laughed dryly. âHow many times do I have to tell you I have another year or two before I hit thirty? But I get what youâre saying. Do you know where Liza Warton lives?â
âYes. Go back to the main road and turn left.â
He was silent a few more seconds. âHave you? Been in love, I mean?â
I sighed and looked out the window. âOnce.â I scoffed. âOr at least I thought I was. Cameron was a fellow chef at the school Tamara and I attended. He was what I thought I wanted. A fellow chef, smart, funnyâ¦human.â
âHuman?â Grant mused. âYou wanted to fall for a human? Why?â
I shrugged. âI thought it would be less complicated. And I think secretly I wanted to know what it was like to just be like everyone else.â
âWhat happened?â
I closed my eyes and shook my head. âItâs too painful.â
âIâm a good listener.â
I smiled, eyes still shut. âIâm sure you are.â
When I felt Grant squeeze my leg, my eyes flew open.
âI mean it,â he said. âYou can tell me anything.â
I turned and faced him. âOkay. Weâd been seeing each other for a few months. And it was nice, ya know? No pressure about the relationship because we were both busy with school. He said he respected the fact that I wanted to spend so much time perfecting my recipes with Tamara, and that he needed time alone too so he could focus.â
I stopped talking because I couldnât speak past the sudden lump in my throat. The pain of the betrayal was still there, but now instead of sorrow I felt anger. True anger at what Cameron had done.
âThen what happened?â Grant prompted.
I sighed. âOne night, he stayed over andâand while I slept, he went through my things. He found my chefâs journal, something every pastry chef has, and took photos of my recipes.â
âIâm almost afraid to know how you found out what heâd done.
