The white noise of the waterfall floats through the air, and the glorious smell of beef fills my nose. What more could I ask for? I watch the water flow into the pool as the greenery rustles around us, agitated by a soft breeze bringing with it the smell of the musty forest and a little of pixie dust.

Eric groans as he lies back on the polished stone. “You know, I don’t know how you do it.”

I laugh as I take another bite of my sandwich, enjoying the hearty flavors of beef and chutney. “You’ve only been doing this for two months, Eric. Imagine doing it for years.”

A soft smile pulls at his lips, and I can tell he’s reading my thoughts. Once upon a time, it would have annoyed the crap out of me. Now, it’s actually kind of useful. Except when I picture things I really shouldn’t be picturing… I picture a barrier in my mind, and he pouts, peeking out at me from under his arm.

“No fair. You have all this awesome power, and all I can really do is read minds,” he mutters, and I roll my eyes, throwing him his own sandwich. “I’m just saying. The least you can do is let me read yours and let me live vicariously through you,”

“Your only power? Please,” I huff and plop a cherry tomato into my mouth. “You’re a badass with that sword. Even Loren says so. You’re quick, calculating, and you put most of my father’s personal bodyguards to shame. You should be proud, Eric. You’ve come a long way.”

I say all of this, but all I can think about is the shield he produced to block my attack all those weeks ago. I wonder if he remembers. He never mentioned it, and he hasn’t produced anything similar since. I don’t have a doubt it was an instinct of some sort kicking in for his protection. And after his strange behavior during training today, I know it is his Primal peeking through; and when our primal urges start to kick in, they really know how to screw you over—but that would mean his eighteenth birthday is no more than six months away. Eric isn’t a Summer Fae.

I really should talk to Loren about the little things that I’ve discovered, but…. I bite my lip, staring at Eric’s face under the dappled light bearing down on us through the treetops—I don’t want him to go.

“Eric?”

He glances at me before sitting up. “I know, I know. I should eat more or else I’m going to be just as crabby as you. You don’t have to tell me twice.” Unwrapping the sandwich, he takes a bite and groans, nodding his head. I narrow my eyes on him.

“Asshole. But no, I was just wondering how you’re feeling?”

He pauses and stares into my eyes. “I’m fine, Breena. I was just a little hungry, that’s all.”

A shutter falls down over his eyes, and I nod, knowing full well that’s the end of the conversation, and I really don’t want to poke at the sleeping bear.
