twenty-six

The Girl paced around the studio back and forth. It didn’t take a genius to see that she was unsettled. She did her best, though, to make it seem like it was anger and rage stewing in her belly, and not fear and indecision, making rock-like fists out of her jittery hands.

On the outside, she looked as if she were solving some strange kind of algebra, wrapping her head around scores of doughnut-shaped dimensions. Her eyes were almost shut, narrowing her focus, while every muscle in her face twitched and spasmed as if she were on the cusp of inducing some impossible proof. Back and forth, she paced, never staying in any one spot long enough for it to be a hindrance to her train of thought, her every step seeming deliberate and purposeful.

On the inside, though, it was anything but.

“This is it, right?” said The Boy. “This is the place.”

He, on the other hand, sounded giddy. It was almost impossible not to. Here he was, on this fantastical adventure with his big sister, out to tear down the establishment – to unplug the machine; to destroy the system and liberate the world from its circuitry bondage.

“This is so cool,” he said. “No one in the gang is gonna believe this when I tell ‘em. We’re probably the toughest kids in the whole world right now.”

And they were.

Nowhere else in the world was there a brother and sister pair, having taken a man hostage, about to carry out an act of sabotage and terror anywhere near as grandiose as this. Were they to be successful, which of course they would, then, in a matter of seconds, eN would be unplugged – its signal stopped, its grasp lessened - and the world would go dark.

“I’ll still be able to watch Bob’s Burgers, though, won’t I?”

It had only just occurred to The Boy that there might be dire consequences.

“It’s ok if I can’t but….”

It was as if he were being told again that both the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus were a lark. Although, he most certainly expected his big sister to tell him that yes, when they pulled this plug, not only would eN stop sending its signal into people’s brains, but the whole digital world as he knew it, from binge-watching every season of his favourite cartoons to ordering home delivered buckets of fried chicken and Thai noodles at the click of a button, all of it, everything and anything in between, would stop.

It would be gone.

It would never return.

Deep down he understood that; he did. He wasn’t stupid. He knew what this all entailed. They had been planning it for months. And so far, it had all been done to a T. Everything had gone exactly the way his sister had said it would. Nothing about this was a surprise, except maybe how easy it had all been. He didn’t even need his ninja skills. But even still, there was a part of him that hoped, in spite of everything, he would still get to watch his favourite cartoon.
