I cannot count the number of times Iâve heard the clarion call from pastors across our nation when they speak on aging. What is this call to arms? It is to stop living lives in a comfortable complacency just because you can. Instead, do an about-face, turn your heart and mind to your Commander-in-Chief, and start obeying his marching orders. As these pastors remind us, if youâre still alive and breathing, then the Lord has something of importance for you to accomplish; otherwise, heâd take you to heaven.
When said that way, I feel a shaking deep down inside of me that simply cannot refuse to heed Godâs call on my lifeâno matter how old I am. Even if I am bewildered about what to do, I can look around me and begin meeting the needs of those closest to me faithfully, daily, and gratefully. As I serve in practical ways today, God may fling open a completely new door tomorrow. The point being, I cannot justify wasting my hours and days away because I donât yet have a clear direction.
As my friend learned during her grief-stricken newness to single parenting, it is enough to faithfully carry out the responsibilities closest to her one day at a time. Then, in time, God miraculously opens new doors and prepares us to serve him there. One final word: God calls those who have made themselves available, and then he equips them to carry out his instructions. Trust and obey, thereâs no other way.
