During the meeting:

ask questions to get the facts;

probe, but not in an adversarial way;

make a note of the interviewee’s responses;

if the interviewee refuses to respond, record that fact, too;

try to get evidence that may substantiate the information provided.

At the end of the meeting:

ask the interviewee if there’s anything else they think it’s important to mention;

ask if there are any other people they think ought to be interviewed;

explain that you might need to follow up with another interview;

tell the interviewee that they will get a copy of their witness statement to check.
