The Smart Mouse

ONE NIGHT, AS I WAS calmly standing around in the kitchen I saw a mouse run down the hall.

I shrieked (of course), Amy came running (of course), and we looked for it (of course), but we couldn’t find it (of course). The worse part was that it was in one of the bedrooms. I was imagining waking up to find a mouse in my hair or something, but thankfully that never happened. In fact, there seemed to be no trace whatsoever of the mouse.

Ruth, Amy’s landlady, set a mousetrap for us in our laundry room (actually it’s more of a laundry closet). But a few days went by and not even a trace of a mouse appeared.

Then there came a day when we opened the door to the garbage closet and there were mouse turds on the floor. We got Esther, Amy’s roommate, to move the mousetrap from the laundry closet to the garbage closet because we were afraid we would get our fingers snapped.

The next day, the cheese was gone, but the trap had not sprung.

We let it go for a few days, but finally we decided the trap needed some peanut butter on it instead of cheese. So we carefully scraped peanut butter onto the trap using wooden chopsticks, trying not to snap our fingers.

The next day, the peanut butter was gone, and the trap still had not sprung.

“I wonder if it actually can spring,” I asked Amy.

“I don’t know,” said Amy. “Why don’t you try it?”

I grabbed the broom to spring the mousetrap with, but while doing so I accidentally knocked over the mop bucket, which fell on top of the mousetrap and sprung it.

“Well, I guess now we know it works,” I said.

Unfortunately, that knowledge didn’t do us much good, as both Amy and I are scared to set the mousetrap again because it might snap on our fingers. Esther and Ruth are gone. And plus, there isn’t much point in resetting the mouse trap anyway, because it is obvious the mouse is far smarter than we are.
