Chapter Fourteen

I was still getting used to the nocturnal lifestyle of the vampyres, but the hope for information was enough to keep me awake. The girls helped by chattering and fussing over my hair, plucking my eyebrows, playing with painting my face, and gushing over my gowns. The girl time was wonderful, but my input was half-hearted at best. I was too busy glancing at the door every five minutes hoping a tracker would waltz up those doors with Ash beside him.

By seven or so in the morning my adrenaline had worn thin and my eyelids were beginning to droop.

“Don’t rub your eyes or you’ll smear the copper!” Laurel scolded me as my fingers hovered over my eyes.

Paige was laying on the bed beside us eating chocolate strawberries. She glanced up and laughed, “Too late Laurel, she already smeared it.”

Laurel took a closer look at the makeup, “We’ll have to teach you to not touch your face, otherwise you’ll always smear our artwork.”

“I can’t help it,” I yawned, “I’m tired.”

“It’s barely seven.” Laurel said, “It’s way too early to go to bed.”

“And the trackers may come back at any moment.” Paige added as she licked chocolate off her fingers.

I glanced at the door, “I don’t know if you’re right. Every moment that passes I’m starting to wonder if they’ll ever come back with news. Good or bad.”

“Have a strawberry,” Paige offered me the plate. “Chocolate makes everything better.”

I took one of the treats, “Chocolate doesn’t mend everything but it does taste delicious.” After a big chocolatey bite, “And free chocolate is always the best.”

A knock on the door broke my concentration of another bite, we three looked up in unison at the door to see Fenrir hesitantly steeping inside the already open door.

“Good morning ladies,” he greeted politely, “I see the chocolate strawberries were all but devoured, even though the rest of the coven never had any.”

I gave the girls shameful looks, but they only glanced at one another and laughed.

“Liam left them on the counter. I assumed they were for anybody.” Laurel snickered.

“They were, they were for everybody.” Fenrir grinned.

Paige snapped her fingers, “That’s it Laurel! They were for everybody not anybody. I think that means we were supposed to share them. Oh, I get it now, how silly of us.”

I rolled my eyes at these two young women, they were completely ridiculous.

Sweet as sugar, Paige offered the stems and pitiful remains of our snacking, “Care for some?”

Fenrir declined and rolled his eyes before turning his attention to me and my little transformation into the image of a proper vampyre, long curly hair and all.

“You look beautiful,” he said softly.

Both girls stared open mouthed for a moment then erupted into giggles and praise about how beautiful I looked. I was the only one embarrassed about all of it.

“It’s nothing, it’s just paint.” I muttered as I slipped off the bed and headed towards the bathroom to wash it off.

Paige caught my elbow, “Don’t wash it off. You look gorgeous.”

“Agreed,” Laurel chimed.
