PART TWO

Chapter One: New Reality

My last year at high school was a haze-infused nightmare. I looked functional from the outside, but inside I was an empty shell. Those closest to me had twice broken my heart, so I kept anyone else from doing the same.

I kept quiet in class. My social life didn’t exist anymore.

I was alone and friendless, but brilliant according to my teachers. I diverted all my focus towards my studies and it paid off. I got top marks and the possibility of acceptance into any university of my choice.

I barely made it to the graduation ceremony. I didn’t want to attend and did so only at the encouragement of my parents.

I did it for them.

I kept hoping to see Ellie in the audience, clapping and cheering for me.... but it was just a hopeless wish.

I didn’t attend prom, but spent the night crying, thinking about John and Ellie.

Buddy was the only source of joy in my life. I tried to forget the heartbreak that got me to him in the first place, and the person who brought him into my life.

Ellie barely kept in touch, though it wasn’t because she was mad at me (or so she said). She was going through auditions in the mornings and at nights working as a server at a restaurant. She was too tired to text back and it would be weeks before I heard back from her.

It wasn’t like before where I could just meet her in person whenever I felt like it. I went to see her mom, who told me that Ellie wasn’t in contact with her anymore.

My heart broke at Mrs. James’ sadness because I knew how it felt.

The first summer without Ellie and John, I avoided places that reminded me of them, which was near impossible as their memories were everywhere.

My summer job as a secretary at an accounting firm (Dad’s idea) gave me a monotonous, mind-numbing routine. I read every single investing book on the bookshelf, too afraid to check out books from the library again.

The only time I went back to the library was to return the books before they were due. I gravitated to the table where John used to sit. A gasp escaped from my lips when I saw that someone had scratched out the names John and Cassandra that were etched there before.

I don’t know why I did it, but that same day I rode my bike over to the abandoned warehouse. My heart sank when I reached the spot. The warehouse had been demolished completely.

There was no trace of the structure remaining.

No trace of my romantic date with John.

No trace that our love ever existed.

Just the wind howling over the open fields; the same echo of my aching heart.
