Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson is best known for writing the Declaration of Independence—but that was just the beginning of his fifty years in public service. Jefferson served as governor of Virginia from 1779 to 1781, and in 1785 succeeded Benjamin Franklin as minister to France. Newly elected president and friend George Washington asked Thomas Jefferson to be the first Secretary of State in 1789. He later served as vice president under John Adams before becoming the third president of the United States in 1801 and serving for two terms. During Jefferson’s presidency, the United States almost doubled in size, largely due to the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson sent two men, Lewis and Clark, to explore the West. The slave trade was also banned during his term.

This tall, red-haired Virginian attended the College of William and Mary and studied law. He was far more comfortable writing about liberty than speaking about it publicly. He was thirty-three when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. He later wrote another bill he was very proud of, the bill advocating religious freedom in Virginia, which was passed in 1786.

Thomas Jefferson promoted self-government along with freedoms supported by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. His beliefs are often referred to as Jeffersonian democracy. He was a founder of the Democratic Party.
