8. THE BUYERS DILEMMA
According to a study by McKinsey (2017), in the US, 30 percent of the vehicle buyers that McKinsey surveyed reported that they contemplated buying an EV, but only 3 percent actually did so [25]. The figures were comparable in Germany where 45 percent considered buying an EV, but only 4 percent did so. Though, in Norway roughly 22 percent of potential buyers eventually bought an EV, but this appeared to correlate directly to the generous government subsidies made available, the report stated. The survey was conducted online and involved 3,500 respondents from the US, Germany, and Norway. This data compares positively with widely held research that more than two thirds of people prefer the status quo in their life, rather than disrupt things with change.
By simply reading this guide and understanding its potential life changing outcome in both quality of life and helping the environment now and for future generations, then by default, you are probably one of the third of positive change agents in society.
McKinsey also argues that roughly 50 percent of potential car buyers are unaware of how EVs and associated infrastructure works. Although, by the end of this book, one would hope that you will be armed with a new found comprehensive knowledge of how EVs and its supporting infrastructure works both for you and the environment.
We know that over the next decade, battery and component parts will continue to fall in price as we head towards price parity, according to Deloitte research [26], by 2024 to 2025 (see figure 19). It is also a fact that the charging infrastructure is expanding faster than the number of vehicles being registered on the roads, particularly in the US and UK. Range anxiety, the phenomenon of not knowing if your EV will make it to the next charging point, is clearly becoming less of an issue as most countries are now at, or close to contiguous charge point coverage on all main routes.
