Kaia couldn’t look at Eion as he left her standing there. She felt his anger and frustration, most of which was directed toward her, and didn’t want to deal with him. Instead, she focused her attention on Hallam and the firmness of his green eyes. Other than Zee, he had the most visible amount of cybernetics that she’d seen on any of the Fallen, which should have been intimidating. But there was a steadiness to the man that helped reassure her.

“What was it that you wanted?” Her voice shook and she had to clear it twice before she felt she finally had control. “Is it about Olya?”

“No.” His gaze slipped to the floor for a moment as though he were trying to find the right words to say. “This connection between our two peoples is still new for all of us. From what I’ve gathered, every Fallen who’s formed a connection with their mate has made…mistakes.” He chuckled. “Ina would laugh at my choice of words.”

“She’s your mate?” It shouldn’t surprise her that he also was with a human. There was certainly a difference about him from Gadiel and the others, even Eion.

“She is. We both made mistakes while trying to solve a crisis.” The hard edge that she’d come to associate with the doctor eased as a smile spread across his face. “You wouldn’t have been told, but the reason I created the inhibitor was due to the near system collapse we went through with the stasis tubes from the Kraken. I had no way of waking all the women to save them, without creating chaos with the Fallen mates. You all nearly died.”

Kaia shook her head, the realization at how close they’d come to disaster without even realizing hit her hard. “Shit.”

“Ina and I had to deal with our relationship, the problems we had adjusting to being thrust together without warning, while trying to save her people. The middle of a crisis isn’t the best time to forge a relationship, and yet we somehow managed to do so.”

She glanced over at where Eion was talking to Gadiel, painfully aware of the chaos that underpinned both their actions. “Crisis seems to be a fairly normal state of being on this planet.”

“True.” Hallam gave her hand a quick squeeze before stepping back. “Just know that you will both figure this out. Give it time.”

“I’ll try.” What else could she say? “Thank you.”

Hallam nodded before leaving the room. Kaia continued to stand in place, not knowing what to do or how to feel. Yes, this was new to all of them, but Eion had also told her that he didn’t want her to come along, even after she’d made it clear she wouldn’t stay behind. If that was how their relationship was going to be, then maybe she should try and find a way to sever this bond now before her heart got involved. That would be better for them both.

Gadiel and Eion quickly gathered the few things they had in the room before approaching her.
