I spot Silas riding his horse and I swear my heart leaps out of my chest and straight into his arms. I peek around him and I see a horse with no passenger on it. I donât even know where the sound comes from, but a heart broken wail comes out of my mouth as I run faster towards the horses. Silas jumps off his horse and tries to grab me. I fight to get past him, to see where my daddy is.
âWhere is he?!â I scream, the sound lost in the storm.
âIvy, calm down! Heâs okay!â Silas is shouting, trying to hold onto me and Iâm still fighting him to get past him. I rush the horse that Dad is supposed to be on and heâs not there. His saddlebags, canteen, nothing is there. Just an empty saddle. Silas grabs me in his arms and pulls me tight against him.
âShh, baby, calm down.â
âWhere is he?â I yell-scream with tears pouring down my face mixing with the drops of water the sky is pouring on us.
âHeâs coming, heâs coming. We had to help some friends of mine. He will be here in a car soon. You have got to calm down.â Heâs pleading with me and Iâm shaking, tears still falling down my face.
âY-Y-you promise?â I whisper, struggling to catch my breath.
âI swear! Baby, please calm down,â Silas pleads.
I take a few deep breaths trying to steady myself. I donât have the words to say anything else. I feel like I lost a piece of my heart for the second time in my life and Iâm exhausted as soon as I begin to steady myself. I wonât be able to calm down completely until I wrap my arms around John Henry Randallâs neck. Then Iâm going to punch him and Silas in the stomach for scaring me half to death and taking another five years off of my life. How did they think that was going to play out? Did they think I would be rational to see an empty horse ride up behind Silas?
Silas holds my hand and guides me back to the house where everyone is standing on the porch with guns, looking scared half the death. It wasnât my fault. It was Daddy and Silasâ fault. Iâm soaked from head to toe and so is Silas. Itâs obvious heâs been soaked for a while now. When they spot the empty saddle, Mr. Charlie and Hayes rush off the porch to us. Everyone has a million questions, but nobody says anything. Hayes grabs the reins on the horses from Silas and Mr. Charlie swoops me up in one motion and begins packing me to the porch.
âSally, get some towels, hurry!â he commands.
I can tell they think the worst just like I did and thatâs exactly why he scooped me up and brought me inside. I guess he thinks maybe a dry towel would lessen the blow. Not a chance in hell. Mrs. Sally rushes in with two huge beach towels and hands me one.
