Spinach

One of the easiest vegetables to grow and can be eaten in all stages of growth; pick the leaves young within a month of sowing and have them in salads or let them mature for steaming or stir-frying. If you sow in summer and autumn, you can have it available all year round too. And we all know how good it is for us, right?

Sow: Summer spinach March–May; autumn spinach August–October

Harvest: Summer May–September; autumn September–November

Site: Spinach grows in all soils except for poor dry soil and does best in partial shade.

Growing: Check packet first as most, but not all, varieties are for autumn sowing. Sow thinly in rows in situ or broadcast a few seeds around a large pot or in a raised bed. Water regularly and feed occasionally. They dislike hot and dry, which encourages them to bolt, especially if summer sown.

Varieties to try: ‘Medania’ is a good all-year-rounder and great for baby leaves, ‘Picasso’ has a fine texture.

Tips: To keep a good harvest of young leaves, sow every month during the growing season. Grow them as a ‘cut-and-come-again’ crop by snipping them off and they’ll regrow. ‘Perpetual spinach’ isn’t quite the same, the leaves are shiny and tougher so have a different texture but still taste good. They grow all year round and can cope with hot summers and keep going into the winter too so may be worth growing some too.
