Sunshine’s body is stiff as she sits behind me on the machine. She’s ridden on it once before, over to Doc’s, but this time is for fun. I’m not in a hurry.

I slow down, waiting for her to relax, waiting for the moment she lets go. I cross the still-unplowed forest road she walked in on and enter the forest on the other side. I have a place in mind, a place so beautiful I know it will take her breath away—but she needs to relax first. It’s not a dangerous ride, but it gets intense in some spots, and I want her to enjoy the exhilaration of the ride as much as or more than the destination itself.

One minute turns into five, then ten. The icy air hitting my face is exactly what I need after the stress of the past week, but Sunshine’s arms grip me harder than before. I know she’s scared back there but fuck if I don’t enjoy the feeling of her holding me so tightly, like she needs me. Like she’s never going to let me go.

It’s hard to believe it’s only been seven days since this woman appeared from the woods and helped herself to my cabin. I remember the first time I saw her feet, her hands, the red rings around her breasts. I was sick with worry.

The fact that I spent the next six or so pushing her away doesn’t bother me. I tried…tried to do the right thing. But the truth is, she needs me. She wants me. I decided last night that’s good enough. Good enough for now. We’re living in a fragile bubble, and I’m not going to be the one to break it. If she leaves me—when she leaves me—it’ll be sooner rather than later, and then she’ll be gone and away from these woods forever. No chance of a repeat of Jenna. Might as well enjoy her while I can.

“Hold on, Sunshine,” I yell over the noise of the machine before pushing it up the last scramble, the last bit of vertical ascent until we reach our destination—a pretty valley ringed by high mountain walls and set off by a large, wide waterfall. At least, the water falls three months out of the year. This time of year, the water from the falls is frozen in time and space, a beautiful, swirling sculpture of turquoise, aqua, and white that extends hundreds of feet from the lip of a ridge to the ground below. I park the snowmobile and get off as carefully as possible, allowing Sunshine to remain on the back.

She inhales sharply when she sees it with eyes the same color as the icy, frozen water. “It’s beautiful. How did you know this was here?”

She removes the helmet from her head, and for the second time today, I struggle to form coherent words. All I want to do is look at her, study her perfect face, lose myself in her unusual eyes. What’s a woman
