28 Karmic Debt and the First Cause
Despite Hugh Lynn's initial reaction to his Christmas present, and the fact that he kept the details of his own life reading a secret for many years, he would later make penetrating studies of these new readings and ultimately embrace them more than Edgar, Gertrude, Gladys, or any of the others. In a 1949 letter addressed to the general membership of the ARE— the Association of Research and Enlightenment, the institution most responsible for carrying on his father's legacy—Hugh Lynn pointed out what he came to believe made Edgar Cayce's life readings unique and valuable in the larger context of spiritualist writings and research on the subject.
" [Reincarnation] had been here in the form of Eastern teachings, Theosophy, and the Rosicrucians [for thousands of years]," Hugh Lynn wrote. "But what was different about Dad's material was the practical application of it for the individual. It wasn't just theoretical. . . There was a [deep and abiding] relationship between one life and another, and the talents and the abilities and the faults and all the emotional factors of one's life . .. were connected directly to this concept of rebirth . .. The readings made it a very personal and practical thing."
As Hugh Lynn made evident in this open letter to the ARE, he and his family had made much progress in their understanding of the concepts first presented in the life readings in 1923. In fact, ten years after receiving his first life reading, Hugh Lynn requested a series of readings, which became the most lengthy and comprehensive discourse the Source gave on the topic. There was one question asked during this series that seemed most pressing to Hugh Lynn: why is reincarnation necessary at all? The Source answered at some length:
"Man's consciousness ... is gained through [what] he, man, does about the knowledge of [what] he is, in relation to that from which he came and toward which he is going," the Source said. "Hence, in man's analysis and understanding of himself, it is as well to know from whence he came as to know whither he is going."
The Source also made it clear that the knowledge gained through life readings is not the same as specific memories from previous incarnations. According to the Source, our forgetfulness of our previous lives is by design, not only for the purpose of maintaining "free will" but for our own protection, because the conscious memories from earlier incarnations could potentially become a great burden. The "memory" that a person takes with him into a subsequent incarnation is more in the form of a lesson that has been learned, or remains to be learned. Unless that "lesson" makes for a better person, it has no lasting value. This is what the Source referred to as "karma," or the impact that one incarnation has on another.
As Hugh Lynn sought to communicate to those who studied the life readings, karma was simply subconscious memory, and not a matter of Divine punishment as popularly understood by many believers in reincarnation.
