Chapter 13
Push Comes to Shove
“What did he say?” Evelyn asked, gazing at Adam impatiently. She was still in fight-or-flight mode, breathing in short gasps, and her face was ash white.
“He didn’t say much, Evelyn. It’s just suspicious…” Adam’s voice trailed off and then he said, “Never mind. We shouldn’t talk here.” Evelyn nodded in agreement, and he wondered if they were safe now that they were out in the open. Were they safe anywhere?
They walked down the plush, carpeted hall, passing a series of offices and labs, as well as several corridors that led to other parts of the building. Adam had never been on the ground level before except to catch the elevator, so he had no idea what facilities were located here. As the exit to the parking area loomed ahead, they walked faster. Both had the same thought at the same moment—the sooner they got out of the building, the better.
Adam pushed open the large glass door, and they practically ran out of the building. Evelyn took off at a trot, and he followed close behind. When they reached his car, she tripped and fell to the ground, sobbing.
“Come on, we’re not safe yet, Evelyn. Let’s get away from here and then we can deal with… whatever the hell just happened,” Adam said. He raised the gull doors to his roadster.
“I can’t, Adam. I can’t go any further.” Evelyn’s voice trembled, and she seemed to be on the verge of an emotional breakdown. Adam gently moved her hands away from her face and tugged on one arm, lifting her up to her feet.
“Please, get in the car, Evelyn. We’ll go somewhere safe.”
She stared straight ahead, her eyes red and moist with tears. Adam touched a finger to her chin and directed her eyes to his.
“I know this is hard to process, but I promise you, we will find answers. Right now, we need to get out of here. I can’t….” Adam’s voice trailed off.
“You can’t what?” Evelyn challenged.
“I can’t protect you if you don’t listen to me.” Adam regretted the words before they were out of his mouth, and he worried that his protective feeling toward the woman he had hired as his assistant was presumptuous and inappropriate. He knew practically nothing about her. Yet, fate had dealt them a hand that brought them together in the worst of situations. Damn it, he couldn’t fight the desire to protect Evelyn from anything worse happening.
“Adam, you don’t need to protect me,” she said quietly. “I can take care of myself.”
“I’m sure you can. But right now, we need to get away from here ASAP.”
Evelyn nodded and regained her composure as Adam looked over her shoulder at the hills in the distance, drab brown after five years of drought across California. The late afternoon sun had lost its intensity and was drifting lower on the horizon. A gentle breeze teased at Evelyn’s hair, blowing a few curls into her face. Around them, hospital employees were leaving work and walking to their cars.
